The UNICAL Graduate School, at the University of Calabar has held an orientation programme for its newly admitted students for the 2016/2017 academic session.

In his welcome address at the event which was held at the University of Calabar International conference centre, the Acting Dean, Graduate School Prof. Arikpo D. Arikpo disclosed that about nine hundred students (900) have been admitted in the 2016/2017 session spread over various disciplines.
Prof. Arikpo used the occasion to commend the Vice Chancellor and management for the long standing support which has helped the Graduate School perform better

Delivering his key note address, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Ndifreke Udonwa lauded the Graduate School for the orientation programme which seeks to familiarize new students with activities in the School as it relates to their programme of study.

The University Don urged students to unify their expectations with that of management as timelines have been set by Graduate School to ensure that programmes are completed on schedule assuring that it was no longer business as usual.

He lauded the” Turn-it-in administration” in the Graduate School as one of the best in the West African sub region as it has helped to curb issues of plagiarism that for so long plagued academic Institutions, noting that to excel in the University of Calabar, students must imbibe the spirit of hard work.

The Vice Chancellor admonished the students to shun all fraudulent tendencies and pay their fees promptly, assuring them that internet facilities have been strategically provided to ease learning and research in the Institution.

In a paper titled “Registration procedures, Graduate School Programme and Duration” the Deputy Registrar/Academic Secretary, Graduate School, Barr. E.B. Iniama said candidates would not be deemed to have registered until they completed their registration in the Graduate School with their forms dully signed by the Dean adding that a candidates status changes to that of student after due payment of fees, Stressing that only candidates duly issued admission letters shall be registered.

On programme and duration, Barr. Iniama noted that timelines within which students must graduate are strictly adhered to, living no room for professional students even as he disclosed that there will be no extension of study in the graduate school.

Also speaking, the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Felix Akpan, represented by the Deputy Registrar in the Division, Mr. Otogo Obule charged students to maintain proper conduct in the course of their academic programme adding that students must accord due respect to both teaching and non-teaching staff of the University in order to enjoy their stay.

Mr. Obule used the occasion to assure all students of ongoing efforts by management to make accommodation available to all post graduate students in the University and therefore called on them to fulfill their financial obligations as a measure of exchange of value.
